BLANKA

Blanka is experimental video art, immersing into the personal experience of artist Blanka Paramós i Claramunt. Three years after giving birth, Blanka decided to cut her hair, and it marked a personal reclamation – a gesture of declaration of self- renewal, as mother, an artist, an individual, honoring her body’s changes and evolving self. The image is entering into the details of existence, subtle movements, psychological reaction to each cut of the hair.

For nearly two decades, Blanka’s  hair has been a medium in her art—a bridge between her body and the world. In performances, she has been inviting others to cut, shave, and remove her hair, exploring vulnerability, identity, transformation and surrender. She kept all of her hair through the years in jars, in suitcases, in Spain and Bali.

While she was pregnant, and living in Bali Indonesia, she has followed the local culture and rituals. Cutting your hair during pregnancy is believed to weaken the soul of the unborn child and make it more susceptible to bad luck. This is because the Balinese believe that the hair is connected to the soul.
