AR…RAY: Part 1, an intercultural collaboration of Sanggar Narwastu, Andys Skordis and Jelena Vuksanovic, is rooted in Bali’s Hindu-Buddhist cosmology and specifically inspired by the Indic symbol of Nawasangga. AR…RAY does not seek to interpret or analyze the symbol in this work. Rather it draws on its inherent capacity as a spatial and spiritual map to integrate both the universal concepts and individual processes that constellate our lives regardless of our culture(s) of origin. Thai Buddhist monk Ajahn Chah says: “You should know both the universal and the personal, the realm of forms and the freedom to not cling to them. The forms of the world have their place, but in another way there is nothing there. To be free, we need to respect both of these truths.” As we listen to music, the five elements of body sensation, feelings, thoughts, perceptions and mind consciousness rise and fall. Because we are often not conscious of this interplay, we experience music as static and fixed in relation to ourselves. But with mindfulness, we can experience the music directly such that it becomes an ever-changing river. Each moment something new arises. As in all of life, music can be experienced without the judgments that often arise with the perceptions, thoughts and feelings of our small self which in turn lead to identification and suffering. Through bodily and mindful attention to sound, identification with the small self evaporates leaving only the spacious heart of the All-Encompassing Self, the connectedness to all things and that from which love flows.
Where in your Body Do you feel Time?
Can you hear your skin breathing?
What scent does the sound have?
What colour is your joy?
